There have been a flurry of scandals involving Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger that have broken just this week alone, making it hard to keep up. So we’re sending an update out to get everyone up to speed:
1. Preferential Treatment. New texts containing several offensive slurs targeted at 2 Councilwomen show that the Chairman of the Airport Commission and former executive at Prince William Chamber of Commerce, appears to have received preferential treatment from the Mayor when applying to the Economic Development Association. Simone Reddington covered this story on the Until they Kick us out Podcast.
UPDATE 10/24: The Chairman of the Airport Commission has resigned. The Mayor and Democrat Councilmembers running for re-election have remained quiet, refusing to comment on offensive slurs made against their Democrat female colleagues. They have tried to sweep this incident under the rug.
2. Mayor Campaigning in Church. Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger gave a politically-charged speech at First Baptist Church putting their 501c(3) status in jeopardy. During her campaign speech in church the Mayor suggested that winning her race was God's will. She also criticized Potomac Local Publisher Uriah Kiser for "never having anything nice to say about her" which he referenced in this op-ed. It is unclear why she felt a church service was the appropriate place to air her political grievances.
3. The Mayoral Debate and secret collaboration between the Mayor and Prince William Chamber. During the aforementioned campaign speech at First Baptist Church, the Mayor accused Tang of receiving the debate questions beforehand. The Mayor received them as well and has a well-established history of demanding event questions from the Prince William Chamber before their events while micro-managing Manassas city staff to ensure she stays the center of attention on print materials and in photographs as we documented here. In addition, the debate being hosted by Prince William Chamber was unfair and problematic in the first place because its President & CEO has endorsed the Mayor.
4. Where is local investigative journalism? On this week’s episode of Until They Kick Us Out Simone asks why she has to shoulder the burden of doing local investigative work. Outside of Potomac Local and the work of this podcast, there is very little happening in the city which has enabled the Mayor's inappropriate behavior.
5. Micron Conflict of Interest. Simone raises questions about whether the Mayor's personal relationship with a Micron Executive is a conflict of interest in light of city involvement in the sale of the GMBL baseball fields adjacent to the Micron plant.
6. Marsteller Public Hearing. The Mayor and City Council are holding a public listening session simply "to check a box" before going forward with plans they've already made while disregarding public input on future use of the 20-acre Marsteller School property. Read more
7. Illegal Meeting. An illegal meeting was held on July 15th at the Art Factory which included the Mayor, City Council, School Board, State Senator Danica Roem and Delegate Michelle Maldonado. No members of the media or public were notified. Simone covered the story here.
